Five Things to Know

  • Bronson Burgoon took the first 18-hole lead/co-lead of his career with a 9-under 63.
  • Danny Lee made the first hole-in-one of the 2018-19 PGA TOUR Season with a 9-iron from 145 yards on the fourth hole. The hole-in-one was the third of Lee’s career. His two previous hole-in-ones came at the 2012 CareerBuilder Challenge and 2015 AT&T Byron Nelson. Twenty eight players in PGA TOUR history have made a hole-in-one on their way to winning the tournament, with the last being Dustin Johnson at the 2015 World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship.
  • 2015 and 2016 CIMB Classic winner Justin Thomas, the 2017 FedExCup Champion, opened with a 6-under 66 in his bid to become the only player in CIMB Classic history to win the event three times.
  • Defending champion Pat Perez opened with a 2-under 70.
  • Kevin Tway, who won last week’s Safeway Open in a playoff, opened with a 2-under 70 after playing his back nine, the front nine at TPC Kuala Lumpur’s West Course, in 4-under 32.

First-Round Lead Notes

First-round leaders/co-leaders at the CIMB Classic to win since 2010 (Ryan Moore/2013, Justin Thomas/2016)

Bronson Burgoon (-9/63)

  • After starting on the back nine, played his first four holes in 1-over-par before playing the last 14 holes in 10-under-par for a 63.
  • Hit 8/14 fairways and 17/18 greens in regulation – tied for the best in the field.
  • Tied his career low in relation to par with the 9-under 63. Previously shot a 9-under 62 at the John Deere Classic.
  • Opened the 2018-19 PGA TOUR Season with a T53 at the Safeway Open last week.
  • Finished the 2017-18 PGA TOUR Season 78th in the FedExCup standings. Collected two top-10s, including a season-best T2 at the 2018 John Deere Classic.
  • Making his first career appearance at the CIMB Classic.

Burgoon Quotes: “I drove it well and I putted pretty good, so it was kind of, I mean, it was boring golf, but that's always a good thing. I chipped in for eagle out of the bunker on my ninth hole, which kind of boosted me, then I kept going. It definitely wasn't flawless golf, but I've been playing pretty good. I took quite a bit of time off after the Playoffs and last week I was pretty rusty, but I felt it kind of coming. You have to putt well to play well. I typically drive it pretty good, so when I putt, I play pretty good. I love it, yeah (about TPC Kuala Lumpur). It reminds me a lot of the courses when I was playing on the Latinoamerica Tour, very hilly, got to drive it good. It was enjoyable. I played yesterday for the first time in the pro‑am and I was glad to get a practice round in.”

Austin Cook (-8/64)

  • After missing left of the green on the par-4 ninth, his last hole of the day, Cook chipped in for birdie to close with an 8-under 64.
  • As a rookie on the PGA TOUR during the 2017-18 Season, posted a victory at The RSM Classic in 2017 and two additional top-10s on his way to 38th in the FedExCup standings.
  • Hit 10/14 fairways and 13/18 fairways in the first round.
  • Making his first career appearance at the CIMB Classic.

Cook Quotes: “Yeah, four (birdies) of the last five. Obviously the front nine went good, 4 under, and then it kind of slowed off there on the back nine to start it and we kind of finished strong, so that was nice.  It was just one of those days everything was going my way. Two chip ins, two of the last four holes, one out of the bunker and there on No. 9, that was a tough chip but I got lucky, hit the flagstick to fall in. Great way to start the year (2018-19 Season), hopefully I can keep the momentum going.”

C.T. Pan (-7/65)

  • Collected two top-10s in his last four starts of the 2017-18 Season with a T2 at the Wyndham Championship and a T4 at the Dell Technologies Championship. Finished 35th in the final FedExCup standings.
  • Has made eight consecutive cuts on TOUR.
  • Finished T17 in his only prior appearance at the CIMB Classic in 2017.
  • Was 4/5 in sand saves in the first round.
  • His older brother, Fu-chiang is caddying for Pan for the first time on the PGA TOUR this week. Also caddied at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

Pan Quotes: “I made a lot of 20‑footers, 25‑footers and that kept me going. I hit a lot of tee shots out there, gave myself some good opportunities. Other than that, just trying to be, you know, cool. Kind of hot out there. He's great (Pan’s brother Fu-chiang is caddying).  We joke a lot, he tried to make some jokes with me. Even when I hit a bad shot, he told me it's okay, I can hit better shot, just kind of joking around and then kind of poking, just like between brothers. So it was fine, it's great to have him on my bag and just mentally he just cools me down and we can talk a lot of things other than golf, so that's great.”

Billy Horschel (-7/65)

  • Beginning on the back nine, the 2014 FedExCup Champ recorded a bogey-free 7-under 65 with birdies on Nos 10, 15, 18, 3, 4, 5 and 8.
  • Ended the 2017-18 PGA TOUR Season with three top-three finishes in the FedExCup Playoffs, including a runner-up finish at the TOUR Championship, where he finished two shots behind Tiger Woods. Ranked fifth in the 2017-18 FedExCup standings.
  • Making his first appearance at the CIMB Classis since 2015. Finished T37 (2015) and T11 (2014) in two prior appearances.
  • Hit 10/14 fairways and 15/18 greens in regulation.
  • Recorded his fifth career PGA TOUR victory at the 2017 Zurich Classic of New Orleans, teaming up with Scott Piercy in the team format.
Scott Piercy (-7/65)

  • Held the first-round lead at the 2015 CIMB Classic after opening with a 10-under 62 but finished T7 after closing with three consecutive 3-under 69s.

Justin Thomas (-6/-66)

  • Starting on the back nine, the 2015 and 2016 CIMB Classic winner played his first four holes in 3-under-par before playing his next nine holes in 1-over-par but closed with birdies on four of the last five holes for a 6-under 66.
  • Hit 10/14 fairways and 17/18 greens in regulation.
  • The current World No. 4 recorded three wins and seven additional top-10s in 23 starts during the 2017-18 PGA TOUR Season. Finished seventh in the final FedExCup standings.
