Chair to spearhead research in banking and finance and to contribute to Private-Public Research Network in Government’s Higher Education blueprint 

 

Putrajaya: Dato' Seri Idris Jusoh, Minister of Higher Education launched the CIMB-UUM Chair of Banking and Finance earlier today at an event jointly organised by CIMB and Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). Also present at the launch were Tengku Dato’ Sri Zafrul Aziz, Group Chief Executive, CIMB Group and Professor Dato’ Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, The Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Utara Malaysia.

 

The CIMB-UUM Chair of Banking and Finance will endeavor to develop the area of banking and finance through research. This collaboration is also part of CIMB’s contribution towards the Private-Public Research Network, outlined in the Malaysian Government’s Higher Education blueprint. The Chair’s responsibilities will involve, among other things, the publication of research findings and scholarly articles in internationally recognised journals for peer review as well as guide the Master’s and PhD students in their course work and thesis writing.

 

Dr. Rashid Salim, with a PhD in Economics from Yale University, has been appointed as the CIMB-UUM Chair Professor. Before his current position, Dr. Rashid was a Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign at Chicago, USA. Dr. Rashid’s expertise is in the subjects of money, religion and economics, as well as banking and economic development.

 

During his speech at the launch event, Tengku Zafrul said, “This partnership is part of CIMB's education initiative. It gives CIMB the opportunity to contribute towards enhancing the research capabilities of higher learning institutions in Malaysia. The CIMB-UUM partnership also complements our corporate social responsibility efforts towards developing our community through education as this industry-academia collaboration will have a positive spillover effect on the quality of the faculty's graduates. CIMB will, in return, have access to quality research and a larger graduate pool."

 

Professor Dato’ Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa said, “The launching of the CIMB-UUM Chair today marks the beginning of a new era of strategic collaboration between CIMB and UUM. The establishment of the CIMB-UUM Chair of Banking and Finance by CIMB, one of Malaysia’s and ASEAN’s leading banks, will certainly enhance UUM’s position as a centre of excellence in Banking and Finance education and research. This will eventually contribute to both the Malaysian higher education sector as well as the banking and finance industry in Malaysia.”

 

The CIMB-UUM Chair is instituted in the School of Economics, Finance and Banking of UUM. The school offers a full range of academic programmes including the Bachelor of Finance, Bachelor of Banking Management, Bachelor of Risk Management and Insurance, Master of Science in Finance, Master of Science in Banking, Master of Science in Risk Management, and Doctor of Philosophy.
