Mak Joon Nien

Mak Joon Nien has close to 30 years of banking experience across Malaysia and Singapore, spanning Wholesale, Commercial and Consumer Banking.

Prior to joining CIMB, Mak spent his career with Standard Chartered Bank. From 2022 to 2026, he served as Chief Executive Officer and Board Member of Standard Chartered Malaysia, becoming the first Malaysian in its 150-year history to lead the Bank. Mak also served as Chair of the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (BMCC) from 2024 to 2026.

He previously spent 15 years in Singapore, where he held senior roles in investment banking, including mergers and acquisitions and leveraged finance, as well as financial sponsor coverage. He subsequently returned to Malaysia to lead Standard Chartered Malaysia’s Corporate, Commercial and Institutional Banking business.

Mak joined CIMB in 2026 and leads the Group’s Growth Markets comprising Singapore, Thailand and Cambodia, with a mandate to build the Singapore franchise, drive the performance of these markets and strengthen regional connectivity to unlock greater synergies across CIMB’s ASEAN franchise.
