CIMB ASEAN Stock Challenge 2.0: six teams eye Tokyo and US$12,000 cash
National Champions from 6 ASEAN countries to compete for Regional Champion title in Jakarta
Kuala Lumpur: CIMB Group (“CIMB” or “the Group”) has announced the six National Champions of the CIMB ASEAN Stock Challenge 2.0 (“the Challenge”). This year marks the eighth year of the Challenge for undergraduate teams from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia and, new to the Challenge this year, Brunei, with a total prize purse of US$40,000 for the winners of the National and Regional Rounds.
At a prize-giving ceremony in Kuala Lumpur, Team “TA” was announced as the National Champion for Malaysia.
Dato’ Hamidah Naziadin, Group Chief People Officer, CIMB Group said, “The CIMB ASEAN Stock Challenge has evolved from the first edition in 2010 – with trading on a single exchange, Bursa Malaysia - to becoming ASEAN’s longest running stock trading competition, with virtual trading across five stock markets today i.e., in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Hong Kong.
In keeping abreast with the digital revolution, CIMB has kept the CIMB ASEAN Stock Challenge fresh and up-to-date by introducing digital tools and enablers, like mobile trading and predictive analysis. As we enter the Fourth Industrial Revolution, we need to ensure that innovation underpins all CIMB’s talent development initiatives to help future-proof its workforce,” said Hamidah.
The competition challenges students to demonstrate their investment and analytical skills by trading with US$80,000 of virtual start-up capital. The National Champions were selected from the top three teams from each country based on the highest percentage gain*, winning US$800, US$500 and US$400 respectively. These teams then submitted strategy papers and the team with the best strategy was selected as the National Champion.
The six National Champions would then represent their countries in the Grand Finale to compete for the Regional Champion title. The Regional Champion would be awarded with US$12,000 and a study trip to the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The top 40 Malaysian teams of the Challenge would also be considered for an internship with the CIMB Group.
Compared to last year, this year’s participation saw a 7% increase to over 3,700 teams from 200 universities across 6 ASEAN countries. Malaysia in particular, recorded a 15% increase in participation from last year, from 2,308 teams to 2,651.

· Malaysia – Team “TA” from Management and Science University
· Indonesia – Team “Management” from Universitas Gadjah Mada
· Singapore – Team “Litquidity Capital” from National University of Singapore
· Thailand – Team “Ray Kim” from Chiang Mai University
· Cambodia – Team “The Brilliant” from The University of Cambodia
· Brunei – Team “HIO” from Politeknik Brunei
Team leader for Team “TA”, Ku Muhammad Amin Ku Khalif, said, “The most challenging part for me were the new features of mobile trading and predictive analysis. However, these really tested and improved my investment and trading skills, which will be beneficial in building my future career with CIMB. As a team, we hope to make Malaysia proud by winning the Regional title in Jakarta.”
The CIMB ASEAN Stock Challenge 2.0 partners include:
· Malaysia Airlines, who is the Challenge’s official airlines for the third consecutive year and who will sponsor the ASEAN delegates’ tickets to the Grand Finale in Jakarta.
· The Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia whose support is significant in fortifying academia-industry collaboration in youth development efforts.
· Progresif Cellular, a new telco partner (in Brunei only) offering free data for participants in Brunei during the trial and actual trading period.
· The regional exchanges of Bursa Malaysia, Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX), Singapore Exchange (SGX), Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) and Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEx).

*Percentage Gain refers to the percentage returns on investment made during the game period that includes Cash on Hand and Market Value of Shares in Portfolio.
Method of calculation: [(Cash on Hand + Market Value of Shares in Portfolio at the end of game)/Cash at Beginning of game)
Example: Team starts with a total virtual capital of US$80,000 and ends the competition with US$50,000 cash and US$100,000 Market Value of Shares. The Percentage Gain is calculated to be 87.50% [(50,000 + 100,000)/80,000)-1]
