CIMB Young Leaders ASEAN Summit to see ASEAN’s future leaders debate regional integration issues
Kuala Lumpur: Fifty of the most outstanding university students and fresh graduates from various educational institutions in ASEAN will take part in the CIMB Young Leaders ASEAN Summit 2014 to be held on 15-16 August 2014 in Kuala Lumpur. The bi-annual summit, a joint initiative by CIMB Foundation and CIMB ASEAN Research Institute (CARI), returns for the second time following its successful debut in 2012.
Modelled after the ASEAN Summit, it aims to coach ASEAN’s future leaders on the regional economic integration. The fifty young delegates will “step into the shoes” of policy-makers to debate various regional issues relating to the ASEAN Economic Integration (AEC) and form resolutions towards that end. This year, in line with CIMB’s vision of diversity, the theme is “ASEAN as a single market: Diversity and Entrepreneurship” and the study focus will revolve around the development of SMEs and innovation in a regional context.
“Aligning CIMB’s mission of being the leading ASEAN franchise with our commitment in empowering the communities where we operate, CIMB Foundation is championing this initiative as we aim to mould ASEAN’s leaders of tomorrow and educate them on the significance of AEC even as the groundworks are laid down by the leaders of today,” said Raja Noorma Othman, Chief Executive Officer, CIMB Foundation.
Tan Sri Dr Munir Majid, Chairman of CARI, echoes her views, “For ASEAN to succeed, it is critical for the next generation of ASEAN leaders to learn about the 47-year-old regional grouping’s challenges and accomplishments. This summit will provide them a conducive environment for open debate, besides offering insights into factors affecting political, social and economic relationships among member states as they move towards greater Asean integration”
The two-day summit will feature one full-day training led by CARI and a one-day summit simulation, where delegates assume the roles of ASEAN leaders to debate economic issues relating to the region, where they will produce resolutions to be presented at regional forums, such as the meetings of the ASEAN Business Club (ABC) and potentially the ASEAN Summit itself. In addition, the best performing team of the summit will be given the opportunity to attend and participate at the ABC Forum taking place on 8-9 September 2014 in Singapore.
ABC is a fully private sector driven initiative of ASEAN’s leading businesses coming together to support economic integration while providing a platform for networking.
Conference speakers of the CIMB Young Leaders ASEAN Summit include Tan Sri Dr Munir Majid, Chairman of CARI, and Pushpanathan Sundram, Former Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN who will be delivering the keynote address, as well as representatives from the Ministry of International Trade and Industry of Malaysia, AirAsia Berhad, and Endeavor Malaysia, the local affiliate of Endeavor, the leading global high-impact entrepreneurship movement.
